There was only one rule, don't eat from this certain tree because bad stuff will happen if you do. You can eat from any other tree, just not this one. Well, we screwed up and ate from that tree and there were consequences that continue on to this day, but God still loves us and he wants us to love Him. Now, if He demanded it from us, it wouldn't really be love, now would it? No, real love is a choice. Some will choose to love and some will choose not to love. The choices made by those that choose not to love God impact everyone, just as the choices made by those that choose to love God impact everyone. If God were to step in and stop every crime before it was committed, where would the line be drawn? If looking upon a woman in lust is a sin, then just as you want God to step in and stop slavery, you want God to step in and stop your thoughts, and we wouldn't be freely choosing to do the right thing. The Nag Hammadi library was probably a Gnostic collection of texts, but it included all kinds of unrelated books, including the only surviving text from the book of Zoroaster, and the only surviving book written by Socrates (as a rule, Socrates didn't write things down - that was Plato's job).
